MERSEYBEATS at MORECOMBE

Bright-More Promotions Present
The Merseybeats Live At
The Platform, Morecambe
Saturday 26-3-2016 By Dave Lodge

Thanks to Tony Crane of the Merseybeats and Golly Goulding of Bright-More Promotions , I was invited to launch my book 'The Long Road' on this special night. When I arrived at the venue an hour before the start time of 7.30pm the fans were already queuing round the building.
The first half of the evening saw us being entertained by the Monkeymen a lively 4 piece outfit who gave us music from the 50's 60' and 70's, interspersed with humorous asides between band members, After an hour they gave way to the exciting Paul Hayes Collection. As always they were well received by the audience. Paul took this opportunity to tell the audience that he was making his last performance with the band due work commitments. He then introduced his replacement Michael who is clearly a talented vocalist. He was also the MC for the night.
There was a tremendous atmosphere in the room as we waited for the Merseybeats to take the stage. Their arrival was greeted by a huge round of applause that continued well into the first song. The place was jumping from start to finish of their performance the talent of these guys is amazing right through from Tony Crane Lead vocals and Lead Guitar, Billy Kinsley Rhythm Guitar, Bob Packham Bass Guitar and backing vocals, Tony's son Adrian on Keyboards to Lou Rosnthal on drums and percussion their musical ability is of the highest calibre. Add to that the incredible vocal harmonies that Billy and Tony have been providing since before The Mereybeats started more than 50 years ago, Bob's own vocal contributions added to his skills on guitar and Adrian's excellent contribution on keyboards and you are hearing the very best of sixties music, performed by the best exponents of the sound you will ever hear.
It would be easy to forget Billy's talent as a musician when you are listening to his voice, but suddenly you are reminded by a brilliant piece of work on harmonica or Rhythm Guitar, to enhance a particular song.
Speaking of individual skill I have to mention Adrian's brilliant cameo on Lead Guitar on the occasion he stepped away from his Keyboard. The talent in the Crane family has to heard to be believed.
The musical selection as we have come to expect is superb, they are singing their hits, 'I Think Of You' , Sorrow, the incredibly haunting performance of 'Don't Turn Around' made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as always. But that's not all added to their own wealth of hit's they also pay tribute to and sing the songs of other sixties stars, The Walker Brothers, The Beatles and as Billy himself said the incredible Everley Brothers to name but three.
But don't be deceived The Merseybeats are in my opinion the best vocal harmony group of their generation but, wow can they Rock and Roll, the dance floor was full of people jiving and just dancing in there own way, lost in the sheer joy of the wonderful music being played by this fabulous band.
There is another side to the members of the band, they don't forget their friends, Billy introduced the fans to an old Primary School friend who was in the audience and dedicated a song to him. Then Tony introduced the The old Troy Shondelle song dedicating it to his friend Dave Lodge. This song is very special to Tony and I for very different and private reasons so I was deeply moved that he did this, though not surprised as I know him to be a thoroughly decent man. That said it must be at least twenty years since he last performed this song at it maybe another twenty before he performs it again.
They ended the show with the anthem, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as Billy said this song is not about football , it is about justice and I am sure every person there knew where he was coming from.
What an incredible night if you take my advice if you see The Merseybeats advertised, beg or borrow do what ever it takes to get the money to go and see them, because whatever it costs they are worth every penny!!!

CHRIS BLACK FUNERAL

Chris Fender Black's ( Chris Veness) Funeral
Tuesday  16th  February 2016
Herongate Wood Green Cemetery
Brentwood, Essex. CM13 3 SE

11 November 1938- 26-January 2016

On Tuesday 16th February 2016  the funeral of  Chris Black one of the great  Rock and Roll Guitarist's was held, we said farewell  to much loved friend but not to his memory or his music.
As with everything in Chris's life his funeral was a huge event, as it should be for a man who was larger than life, a man who towered over Rock and Roll Music in the UK.
From the day he first picked an old guitar out of the rubble after a World War Two bombing raid Chris Black knew he would play  and love Rock and Roll  all his life.
He was influenced so he told me by the playing of Bill Doggett Scotty Moore, Bill Haley and later Duane Eddie. Influenced no doubt, but he developed  his own style and that style excited people for more than 50 years.
In a career that started with gigs down in Chilsehurst Caves in Kent and took Chris through his National Service to working in clubs and theatres throughout the UK and Europe Chris was always innovative.  He shared the stage with so many of  the names of the 50's and 60's  including Brian  Poole, Tommy Bruce, Don Lang, Heinz, Ricky Valance, Jess Conrad, Screamin' Lord Sutch, and Wee Willie Harris to name just a few.

His funeral reflected  everything that was good about Chris, loving father, loyal friend, musician and not least his love for the birds and the environment.
Held at The Herongate Wood,  Green Cemetery where a tree is planted with every burial so that  everything over the years returns to nature. Chris would love that the cycle of life is being renewed.

The service itself was typically  Chris as  the 100's in attendance entered and circled the small chapel the sound of  Chris and his beloved guitar 'Brenda The Fender, playing 'Peter Gunn' rang out and the scene was set for us to hear instalments of Chris's life narrated by the Celebrant, Steven Heath. There were also personal memories from Chris's children, grandchildren and friends  'Lord' Peter Stockton and Bob Burgos, interspersed with more music. 'Rock and Roll parts  1& 2'  a recording by Bill Doggett,  and 'Ghost Rider's in the Sky', and  3-30  Blues,  played  by  Chris.  Pam Ayres poem,  'I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth, brought  laughter  from the congregation. Exit from the chapel was accompanied by the sound of Chris playing 'Sleepwalk'.

We walked to the graveside  and there said our farewell with the  Lords  Prayer.
The family and Chris's loved ones were joined for the service  by his many fans and representatives of the music world including Brian Poole  lead singer from the Tremeloes, Dave Lodge manager of late Tommy Bruce and Mick Clarke original bass player from The Rubettes.

Those of you who would like to donate to Chris's favourite charity, The Essex Wildlife Trust are invited to do so by going to www.justgiving.com/ewt/donate. If you wish you can personalise the donation with a message in memory of Chris.

TOMMY BRUCE BOOK

BOOK REPRINTED DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND!

Written by his former manager Dave Lodge, "Have Gravel will Travel" the official Tommy Bruce biography has due to popular demand has been reprinted and available from Amazon or from the author.

The Official Tommy Bruce Biography
The amazing story of how a young cockney lad went from ‘barra boy’ to a teen singing idol. A unique insight into the 1960’s rock ‘n’ roll scene when Tommy Bruce and contemporaries such as Billy Fury, Johnny Kidd and Joe Brown were doing the rounds together. In this fickle world of show business many friendships don’t stand the test of time. Not so that of Tommy Bruce and Dave Lodge, his manager, friend and author of this biography. We see how their partnership has endured since the 1960’s unhampered by contracts, surviving on friendship through the highs and lows. The book is a testimony to Tommy’s affable style both on and off stage making him a well-loved character in the industry for the past five decades.

ELKIE BROOKS LEGEND

Another great night at Theatre Severn Shrewsbury seeing the legend that is Elkie Brooks.
She has been telling us for 38 years that Pearl's A Singer but then so is Elkie mixing jazz, blues, rock in an energetic performance that was a raw as one could get - no big stage sets, no major lighting effects, not even an introduction as she took to the stage and belted out number upon number acknowledging the almost sell out audience.
Celebrating her 70th birthday during this tour, like a bottle of fine wine (lilac or otherwise) Elkie gets better with age.

STATUE FOR EPPY CONCERT

'Statue 4 Eppy' gig @The Epstein Theatre on Saturday 28th February.

The Shakers are delighted to be featured as the 'Cavern' group for the first half of this fab show. They will be backing various Merseybeat legends as they celebrate 'The Spirit Of The Cavern'. As anyone who has seen them knows, they cover most of Epstein's artists in their regular sets at the Cavern, including Cilla!

wink emoticon Here's what the press has to say about the show - 'The line-up for the Feb. 28 concert is to help raise money in the Statue 4 Eppy campaign to erect a statue for Beatles manager Brian Epstein in Liverpool. The show will be hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Billy Butler and will feature a line-up to celebrate the life and career of ‘Fifth Beatle’ Brian Epstein.
One part of the concert will feature musicians and performers from the Mersey Beat era denoting “The Spirit of The Cavern.” These will include Cy Tucker, Faron of Faron's Flamingos, Beryl Marsden, Ray Ennis, Karl Terry, Billy Kinsley and Tony Crane, who will pay tribute to the music that was featured on the famous Cavern stage during Brian Epstein's life.
Tucker's band, Cy and the Cimmerons, played at the Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool on Dec. 27, 1960 on a bill with the Beatles, who were described as “Direct From Hamburg.” Billy Kinsley and Tony Crane were in the Merseybeats. Ray Ennis was vocalist and lead guitarist with the Swinging Blue Jeans. Karl Terry was a member of Karl Terry and the Cruisers. And Beryl Marsden toured with the Beatles on their last UK tour in 1964'.

ELO EXPERIENCE THEATRE SEVERN

Tonight 24th Jan - I went to Theatre Severn Shrewsbury and bumped into "Horace Wimp" a "Wild West Hero" who was having a "Showdown" on the "Telephone Line" with an "Evil Woman" from "Xanadu" who had caught the "Last Train To London" to see a "Sweet Talkin' Woman" who welcomed me as "Mr Blue Sky" after telling her dog to "Roll Over Beethoven". We sorted out a few "Livin' Things".

Yes if you recall the above song titles I went to see ELO Experience a tribute to a great band from 1970s - Electric Light Orchestra.

Tonigh's show featured a great band of musicians including a glamorous three piece string section, fantastic lighting effects and video projection.

This was a fantastic start to the new season at Theatre Severn following pantomime and was rewarded with a sell out audience. I look forward to many more great shows in this fantastic venue.

THE TWIST

THE TWIST THEATRE SEVERN SHREWSBURY THURSDAY 16th OCTOBER 2014

Set in an American Diner The Twist is a great 1950s 60s theme show featuring a great diner looking set, a 7 piece houseband and an entertainment bill that featured Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Connie Francis, Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Lulu, and Dusty Springfield, plus a compere who's jokes believe it or not are older than mine. West End star Suzi Jary played all the female roles with costume & wig changes and recreated the voice of those she was portraying, with her husband as Buddy Holly as well as performing as himself, and Danny Fisher played Elvis all backed by a smartly dressed group of proficient musicians.
If you've not seen this lively, fun filled show yet then check it out at a venue near you or hopefully wait till next year when it will hopefully return to Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn, I would think that the almost capacity audience will convince the theatre management to rebook the show.

SENSATIONAL SIXTIES SHOW

SENSATIONAL SIXTIES SHOW at THEATRE SEVERN SHREWSBURY FRIDAY 10th OCTOBER 2014

The title of the show really does sum it up. Although Truly Sensational would be more like it.

First up was the fabulous Ivy League. Dave, John & Mike never fail to deliver a first class show that features top musicianships, great vocals and their trade mark comedy. Next up was Union Gap UK who having done their own set backed the grand master, the man with the glove - Dave Berry. Opening the second half was Alan Lovell's Swinging Blue Jeans with Hermans Hermits topping the bill, with an encore featuring a full ensemble bring the show to a close. Former member of Freddie & the Dreamers, Alan Mosca did a fine job as compere.

The sell out audience at Theatre Severn really showed their appreciation and I am sure a Full House will greet the show when it returns next year.

BILLY FURY YEARS THEATRE SEVERN

BILLY FURY YEARS THEATRE SEVERN SHREWSBURY JUNE 2014

Enjoyed a very brilliant show at Theatre Severn Shrewsbury last Saturday - The Billy Fury Years featuring probably the best Billy Fury tribute singer Michael King. What I particularly liked about Michael is that he openly said that he didn't think that he was Billy but paying homage to his idol and one of Britain's most underrated singers.

GERRY ACROSS MERSEY THEATRE SEVERN

GERRY ACROSS THE MERSEY THEATRE SEVERN 30th May 2014.

Not a big crowd at Theatre Severn Shrewsbury tonight, despite an excellent band. The show billed as Gerry Cross The Mersey features legendary Liverpool hit makers Gerry & The Pacemakers. An excellent showman fronting four superb musicians. In between songs Gerry treated the audience to his scouse humour which encapsulated the audience.

It seems an age since I first worked with Gerry at Welshpool Town Hall in 1983, but have seen him many times since. He hasn't lost that personality that has endured audiences since the early 1960s. His voice was still there and shone in particular at the end with the anthem that links him with football teams around the country - "You'll Never Walk Alone"

Dave La from Canterbury way sang & played accoustic guitar some old stuff some more modern. The first half was closed by a duo from Winsford called 'Road to Ruin' who impressed many in the room with their Beatle and other 60's music. The second half kicked off with 'The Smokey Joe band' from liverpool, the lady lead singer had a powerful voice. The Undertakers with guests finished off the musical procedings with Gaz Gaskell joining Brian 'Saxaphone' Jones. The 'Sax' duets were something to behold, Geoff Nugent was in fine fettle. TALON BEST OF EAGLES

TALON THEATRE SEVERN SHREWSBURY SUNDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2013

I have been following the progress of this band since I first engaged them in Oswestry some 16 years ago. From those early days they have grown in stature to the height that they have now been officially named the UK's No1 Eagles tribute band.

From the moment they step onto the stage these guys ooze sheer class - excellent musicianship, great lead vocals and superb harmonies. The show features not only the hits of the Eagles but also album tracks, all professionally introduced in what album they were from, who wrote them and so forth. There were a few new members in the audience "Talon Virgins" as Chris Lloyd put it, but I am sure that they will have been converted and will be regular attendants at future Talon gigs.

The guys have also recorded an accoustic album and in 2014 embark on an acoustic tour (see flier above) featuring the music not only of the Eagles but also Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel, among others.

For details of the Eagles tribute dates and the acoustic tour visit

JOHN WALKER MEMORIAL CONCERT

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to The Dakotas’ 4th John Walker charity show held at Uppermill Civic hall on Friday 18th October.
The room was totally buzzing! And what a line up! Tony Crane (The Merseybeats) Geoff Turton (The Rockin Berries) The Dakotas, The Usual Suspects, Chris Fender Black & Rosie B from the C’mon Everybody tour, then the technicians:
Paul Brierley on sound, and Kevin Cain and Ben with their amazing lights, and Michael Troy Cartmell for photographing everything that moved or stood still!
In fact everyone in that building contributed to a fantastic memorable night.
LIVE music, great company and all in aid of raising money for two very worthy charities (Save the Children and Bury Hospice) The raffle prizes were amazing and had mainly been donated by Cynthia, John’s wife who had flown over from the US especially for the show! John Walker’s own guitar we auctioned off and it made £600 alone!!!! A guitar signed by Chris Farlowe, Wayne Fontana, The Merseybeats, The Dakotas, Geoff Turton, Mike Pender and Dave Berry was the coveted raffle prize! All the artistes had an absolute ball. Extra thanks go to Ronnie Ravey, The Dakotas frontman, for compering the entire evening singlehanded.
People will be talking about this show for a L O N G time!!!
Here’s to next year!

Finale with Cynthia walker joining the musicians on stage.

If you were at the memorial concert and want to add your own comments please feel free to do so!
